# Research Peptide Documentation and Testing Glossary

> Analytical terms are most useful when they preserve the limits of the underlying measurement. This glossary defines common documentation language without turning a test name or percentage into a broader quality claim.

## Documents and traceability

These terms connect a physical research material to its supporting record. Exact usage can vary by organization, so the controlling procedure and document should take precedence over a general glossary.

- **Certificate of analysis (COA):** A lot-specific document reporting tests, procedures or references, specifications, and results provided by an issuing organization.
- **Lot or batch:** A defined quantity assigned a shared identifier for production, testing, traceability, and disposition.
- **Catalog code:** A supplier's identifier for a listing or presentation; it is not a substitute for a lot number.
- **Chain of custody:** The documented sequence of possession, transfer, location, and responsibility for a material or sample.
- **Specification:** A defined set of tests, analytical references, and acceptance criteria used to evaluate a material for a stated purpose.

## Analytical results

Results should remain attached to the method, units, sample, and decision rule that produced them. Similar-looking numbers can represent different measurements.

- **Identity:** Evidence used to determine whether a sample is consistent with the named material and distinguish it from plausible alternatives.
- **Purity:** A description of the relative freedom from specified or detected extraneous components under a defined measurement approach.
- **Assay or content:** A quantitative determination of the amount of a defined component in a sample under the stated method and reporting basis.
- **Acceptance criterion:** A predefined numerical limit, range, or other condition used to evaluate a result.
- **Pass or conforms:** A decision that the reported result met the stated criterion; it should not be expanded to attributes that were not tested.

## Chromatography and mass spectrometry

Instrument names describe analytical platforms. The procedure, settings, reference materials, controls, calculations, and validation determine what conclusion the data can support.

- **HPLC:** High-performance liquid chromatography, a technique that separates sample components in a liquid mobile phase and records detector response over time.
- **LC-MS:** Liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry, combining chromatographic separation with mass-to-charge measurements.
- **Chromatogram:** A plot of detector response against time or elution volume for a chromatographic run.
- **Retention time:** The observed time associated with a component under the specific chromatographic conditions.
- **Mass spectrum:** A representation of detected ion abundance against mass-to-charge ratio under the stated instrument conditions.
- **Reference standard:** A characterized material used as a comparison or calibration reference for a defined analytical purpose.

## Material form and stability

Form and dating terms describe the material and the evidence-supported period under stated conditions. They do not provide directions for personal use.

- **Lyophilized:** Freeze-dried under a defined process to remove water; the term alone does not establish composition, sterility, or storage life.
- **Storage condition:** The documented environmental range and protections under which supporting information applies.
- **Temperature excursion:** A documented period outside the stated temperature condition that requires review and disposition.
- **Retest date:** The date after which a material should be examined again against appropriate criteria before continued use under the applicable system.
- **Expiry date:** The end of a supported period under stated conditions, as assigned by the responsible organization.
